Recently over 50 users have registered but post only spam links. What can I do to stop this?

Hello,

As a phpBB user, here is what I have done.

I have turned on visual confirmation and e-mail confirmation. I have installed The Humanizer, Advanced Visual Confirmation and Visual Confirmation on New Posters (set to 1 post). I have tweaked Advanced Visual Confirmation a little (not sure what, if any effect that might have) and removed any default fonts that made for really hard to read CAPTCHAs.

I have also installed Inactive Users. This hack allows you to easily display and delete any accounts that have not confirmed themselves via e-mail. It also includes other important information, such as post counts, so that you do not accidentally delete someone with a bunch of posts.

On a somewhat related note, I have also installed Censor Block and if there is a site that gets spammed a lot, I add it to the censor. These posts will then get blocked and will not be posted.

At this point in time, I believe that Visual Confirmation on New Posters is golden. But, we'll see how long it lasts.

Good luck! Smile

Alright I installed the humanizer but 2 new bots signed up.

Does Advanced Visual Confirmation actually help against spam.

And for the inactive suers hack how long should a user not post for to be taken off.

It only displays users who haven't been confirmed via e-mail. I usually check it out once every little while and delete all accounts except ones signed up for on the current day.

Thats interesting Patrick as I see new bots signing up at phpbbhacks everyday and one signed up only an hour ago while I was there.

The Visual Confirmation and Captcha programs have all been bypassed by nots, even the Captcha used on phpBB3 which the developers said would take years for them to bypass.

The first and best method to stop them in the registration process is to confirm their email is valid and as we all know, none of them use valid email address's so to install the very simple mod Lice Email Validation, is the very first step in stopping bots.

Without that mod in place, they will continue to bypass anything that you install.

The Humanizer is one hack that has been bypassed by bots as well as it is quite simply to answer yes to that question and it provides no security against bots at all.

As I said, the first place to stop them in registration is with email validation.
