I was wondering one thing and I want your opinions with this topic

1) the WEBSITE part of the profiles, that is open to spammers to advetise their site
2) I do have it on the USER activation but what is to stop a spammer to spam in every forum "go to http://www.mysite.com"?
yes I can delete the user and ban him but we all know that is easily accessible by creating a new account.

I do not have that as a permission for my members, basically because one of our rules is no advertising on site of any kind.

However, on sites such as this one I can see the reason behind allowing it since most of us who post here do have our own forums and this is about administrating them. I would hope that no one here would abuse that .. although I know that there is always gonna be someone who would just because they are that kind of someone Rolling Eyes

I would say it would depend on the forum you are running and what you want your members to get out of it. If sharing of information your members may have in common is part of what your community is all about then allowing them to share their websites would be ok. They don't have to insert their site url, it is their choice. If they make that choice, then they make the choice to deal with any negative consequences as a result. This being said, it may be wise for you to enter some kind of diclaimer into your rules stating that if they do include their site in their signature you can not be held responsible for members clicking that link.

Not sure I answered your question, but basically I see it as the member's responsibility if they choose to "advertise" their site.

Hello,

Honestly, I'm not 100% on what you are asking. The website field is for people to mention their website. If you don't want them to, take it out, I would say. Smile

I think he's talking about the link spammers who sign up an account with no intention of ever being a member, just to get a backlink to their porn site or viagra site in their user profile page.

I got around the problem firstly by banning Hotmail and Yahoo email address's for registration purposes as these spammers only tend to use easily accessible email account where they can set up hundreds of them.

New registrations on my forum have to use their ISP email address or a Gmail account. Gmail has not yet been affected by spammers to my knowledge but no doubt it will in time and I will then ban all Gmail email addies as well.

Activating the Visual Confirmation also helps as the majority of these spammers are on auto sign up (bots) and if you dont have the VC activated then they can easily sign up.

Somehow bots got around my VC on one board. I think 5 of them registered in a row...Is there something more I need to do about it?

In order to make the harder to OCR images your server needs ZLIB installed.

That went right over my head. Can you explain that in more detail?

I do have VC turned on, and the reg option set to user...
though I could set it to admin right now but if it gets big like another site I manage, which has 15000 world wide members, and in an average there is 300 sign ups a week or so (this being a world wide community), and to check EVERY profile would be a pain in the butt, anyways back to my own site...

I also meant someone who goes and posts:

come to my site:

http://www.softmariepornosite.com (not real site)

like their first post they make, is there a way to prevent that?

yes I know in sites like this (communityadmins.com) is necessary but on other sites it is not necessary...

how do you deal with spammers (and not the ones who just post to raise their counts), but "advertising" spammers.

You could put a restriction on URL's in your ACP by adding them to banned words.
