Have you ever switched your forum's software while already in operation or maybe pre-operation?

Nope. I've always been using phpBB. I once had a ProBoard, but it wasn't connected to my current forum in any way.

Nope. The closest was my longest running community. I started on a remotely hosted UltraBoard - hosted by HomepageTools. I think I went a couple months with that before switching to phpBB. I didn't run any converter, etc. Didn't have that many posts/members, anyway.

I started one forum as a remotely hosted board, then switched to my hosts' WWWThreads software when that remote service closed. Then the host stopped offering that, so I tried to switch to phpBB... didn't work out too well on that host, and there's no board there now.

Other than that, all my boards have been phpBB.

Yes, I've done this on several occasions. Mostly, moving from phpBB to vBulletin, but a few other scenarios as well. When you're converting forum software on communities with thousands of members and tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of posts, it's not really for the faint of heart, be sure you have tested backup copies of everything. To be extra safe, do the conversion on a copy of the backup instead of the live database.

I've also made the move from phpBB to Vb. I have always preferred Vb, I believe that it is much more feature rich and allows you to keep greater control over your community. However VB is expensive, so what I tend to do is start a forum in phpBB and then if it is on the way to becoming a success I will buy a Vb license and make the move.

When i've made the move the members have always preferred the new forum software and I've never had anyone complain about the move.
