Yep, it's all about recognition. I once changed my avatar at one community where I'm a moderator. When people started saying they didn't recognize me because of it, I changed it back and have left it alone since. It became part of my identity there, and it seems like it always will be.

I have this avatar for 3 years now. I am active in many forums and I use it everywhere I go. since I always wanted to be a good member and post good messages it helped people recognize me and in a way increased their respect.

It's indeed an old one and I should "upgrade", but in a way it's a part of me Wink

Using default avatar that the forum gives you is a real bore. When more and more members joins, the same avatars will be probably be used by more than one member. That would sort of defeat the purpose of having avatars.

My personal take on this is, to allow users to upload their own avatars. But at the same time making sure the avatars are not obstrusively large but at the same time not too small. The perfect size in my opinion is 100x100 avatars.

On community-oriented websites, I find avatars are somewhat of a must - they allow you to give a "face" to your fellow members. I think it's a lot less important for forums that are more for discussion & support than community, though.

I find it also helps to have moderators with such "faces" - easier to notice, easier to remember.
