|
|
Avatars seem to be very popular among many forum users. Any idea why? Personally I don't generally prefer avatars for myself, and as you can see, in many cases I prefer to be without an avatar even when it is allowed. Of course, on some communities which offer pre-installed or built-in avatars I pick one which catches my fancy. But that's mostly because I am lazy to upload my own
So do you allow avatars? If so, any reason? If not, why not? _________________ Literary Forums

I do allow them and always did. It's easier to track down my members in the topic view since I recognize the avatar. I allow small *default sized avatars as set by the phpBB script, and I think they are indeed nice. _________________ Webmaster articles, tutorials and topics |

I think people use them because they give a sense of identity, which makes the forums seem more personal. Everyone likes things online to feel more personal - I reckon. _________________ My Sites: Web Hosting Discounts - Freelance Web Design - Webmaster Resources |

Avatars can help in user recognition. If one gets to know a user it is easy to pick out their posts in the thread if they have an avatar. _________________ [/SF] |

I really don't like avatar galleries, we allow user's to upload their own avatar if they want, but a default is displayed if they don't.
It adds a sense of personality, like what has already been said. _________________ Marc

Definitely, I know my Administrator's avatars by heart, so I easily see the important posts. The same with me, I try to create a distinct avatar, so my users can do the same. |

I agree with Keith. We all look different in real life, why not look different in a forum then just have name.

I don't mind people having avatars, as long as they are not innapropriate it's a nice chance to possibly find out what interests them or what they are like. For instance my avatar may make people think I'm the secret third pill that was edited out of the Matrix before release. Or I may appear to be a semi-gelatinous rounded rectangle, it's all in how you perceive it I suppose.
But back on topic I agree with what was said before it lets a person be identified, etc. I won't go back and rehash exact words. _________________ MMO Gaming |
