| I have to disgree with this statement. When you purchase a piece of software you expect an uninstaller to come with it, do you not? Isn't it considered extremely unprofessional for a company to not provide a way to remove their software? We certainly don't believe software companies are sending the "wrong message" by letting us have the freedom to do this. In fact, we become very angry if we install a product and find no way to remove it later. |
Thing is though, in order to uninstall something all you need to do is keep a backup of your files (which every mod install script tells you to do) and restore them. The sql is no longer called in, and is no longer a hassle. Now if i paid for someone to code something for me that was complex and huge, id expect an uninstaller (which is why i made the notable exceptions of attachment mod and categorieies hierarchy mods for phpbb) Even then though, a bit of common sense by end users can go a long way.
Its a matter of an end user taking 3-5 minutes making backups or a mod author a much longer period of time to write a specific uninstaller for everyone that happens to not like what they ended up with. This is just not feasible for those who release their work for free. When something is released freely, it is released as is with no warranty which means that the onus is on the end user to use some common sense.
Like has been said, its nice when people make a pretty uninstaller, but to me its just not an efficient use of time and it sends the wrong message. Basically it sends the message to me that enough people have disliked this mod to warrant the making of an uninstaller (even when undoing what has been done is ususally very very simple).
