What are the powers that you give or restrict your moderators? For example, I have disabled deleting posts so moderators can only edit posts and not delete them.

Also on some forums, moderators are allowed to ban people (by default phpBB doesn't have a moderator ban panel). I don't have this feature either.

So what powers do you restrict or give your moderators? Have any one you given moderator ban powers or the ability to delete posts?

I haven't changed the phpBB settings, so my mods have the default powers: edit, move, delete.

Same here, I think this is just enough power to complete the job. Giving them the option the ban or alter smilies just doesn't fly with me. I want Moderators, not Junior Administrators. Laughing

Global Moderation is the same way, I think the extra power is just Moderating all forums, so I wouldn't alter anything with them either.

2-3 Moderators that can Moderate a single forum, locking moving and deleting.
2 Global Moderators to clean up any messes the Moderators couldn't handle, or if they just get to it first.
1 Administrator to clean up major issues and Administrate the forum.

Of course these numbers are effected by the population of your fora, and by your number of forums and categories. Cool

Edit, move and split. While they have the ability to edit, it isn't something we do. We move any posts that violate our User Guidelines or that must be removed to a private Trash Bin forum. We don't delete posts at all.

Editing can be more dangerous than delete. They could change the meaning of someone's post and with phpbb, you would never know it. While I have edit and delete enabled, I tell my mods that edit should be used when asked to edit, and delete only used for removing duplicates (it's the only thing we delete). Otherwise, move is the main thing they need.

Yes. The one big issue with phpBB is that it doesn't flag posts which are edited before they're replied to and also moderator and admin edited posts. But so far I don't have any issue as my moderators are very responsible that way.

However, I've never felt comfortable allowing others to delete though. Don't know why...

Edit, Split, Move, I rarely, if ever, delete posts and I don't want my moderators to either.

E/M/S for me, too. Deleting is usually something I try to avoid, so that I have a record of offenses for future reference. I avoid editing too, though. It has too many potential shady uses.

Edit, move, delete, split also gave them option to issue a warning to users using yellowcard mod that is ban power. I have some complaints about posts deleted but till now im happy with my mods work.

Edit/Move/Split/Delete/smilies/filter/lock - I give my mods a few extra powers that i myself dont take much stock in. I dont care all that much about smilies, and i dont use word filters all that often. I never delete threads (and neither do my mods) so it goes as an unused power. If my mods happen upon a bad thread before i or any other admins do, then the power to turn on filters and/or lock the topic is invaluable. This way they can "freeze" the topic so the other admins and i can take a look at it.

All uses of edit are required to be commented in the post and are logged in a separate table in my database (so if theres a dispute over improper editing, i can look up the original text in my db)

example: [edited for improper language]

Really though, my mods havent had much opportunity to use their powers (other than maybe split/move) since our members are generally so well behaved. The only topic that had to be locked was (ironically enough) started by me ^_^
