I didn't know there was a mod for it. Using the ranks works fine for me. I prefer to mod my boards as little as possible to make updates easier.

I deal with that sort of stuff on a case-by-case basis... but as a general rule, I will allow a member three chances before considering banning, and even then, I usually only ban if:
- they're a troll that isn't contributing to the community
- the general consensus between me and my moderators is that the member is taking away from the community

A few of the communities I run are dedicated to rpg (roleplaying). Our rules on banning are stated as such on our forums:

Bans - We do not like banning - except for in the case of flooders/spammers/obnoxiousness/advertisers. Bans are earned when private communications has not adjusted the attitude of someone violating the Rules and FAQ. As a general rule observed by the Council, the following is the length of time for a ban:

* Spammer - Permanent
* GodPC - 1 Week
* OOC Harassment - 1 Week
* Rude/Obnoxious Behavior - 1 to 2 Days
* Repeated Offences - Permanent
* Ban Evader - Permanent

Fortunately, I have not yet had to ban anyone in the past 6 years.

Ive only had to ban two people ever. One was removed after a week when we were able to discuss it and the user vowed to change his ways. The other has been banned permanently. Both were for flaming. Never had problems with anything else. Usually i go with warning/gag (disabling his posting)/temp ban (3 days to a week)/permanent ban. Straightforward and simple as that.

Our rules are lax so if we feel someone needs to be taken care of, we have no hesitation, as they are obviously out of line.

On my forums, there are few things I insta-ban for.

The list is as follows, top being most severe:
Racism
Sexism
Warez

But I take most things on a case-by-case basis. I try and give at least 2 to 3 warnings based on what has transpired. If a user repeatedly starts arguments, cusses, etc... And myself, or other staff members have given him ample warning, I will ban him.

On my forums, I have had to ban a total of 12 people, I think.

Ive only ever had to ban one user. It was due to signing up for the purpose of spamming. Didn't post and I didn't have a solid ip logger in place. (naturally thats not an issue now). I only recovered his email and username but I dont seem to have the problem anymore.

He/she spammed my shoutbox (the only thing that didnt hav the censor words on). Was a rival chatsite.

One of my posters tried to advertise her own chat site. But since she came on and posted some sense, i just censored the link and that was that.

The only thing that would prompt me to do an Insta-Permanent ban would be if I know for sure a user tries has tried to/is trying to hack into the forum or hack into my admin account or some other member's account or something like that.

Apart from that my site is very new so no problems thus far, but in most cases I wouldn't resort to banning very easily. I hope that situation of banning never comes....
