Just a quick question. If you find a username like IKEAGiftCenter and then searched on the web and found that this user was a one-post spammer on another forum, would you ban immediately?

I know that it's 99% likely to be a spammer, but would you do this taking a small risk that it might be a genuine user.

Also in general, would you ban a user for a known pattern of bad behaviour (not necessarily spamming) on other web forums?

If I know it's a bot I might ban it, but if you are unsure then I might wait. As for banning based on other forums banning of a member, it would depend.

Generally I would say no, I won't ban because someone else banned them (unless of course we are talking about other sites in a group of sites I own in which case I may ban them across all of my sites). Different forums have different rules which can be a factor to consider. Also people can change their attitudes sometimes, which is another thing to consider.

I can't really give a definite answer for myself as I would have to look at it on a case by case basis. But, to answer in general as you mentioned, No.

My thoughts exactly.

Yes, I will. I mean, it's very uncommon (case by case, as Brandon said), but I have and will. Often times, it's a combination of activity at my site and elsewhere - not just what happened at this other site. It has to be very clear. For instance, we had a user at one site who had been in a lot of trouble. I found him at another site making disrespectful and inappropriate remarks about me, my staff, etc. How'd I know it was him? He posted a PM that I sent him. Smile So, he was done.

Ultimately, if someone is disrespecting me or my staff at home or elsewhere, I don't want them. So, if I see someone acting a certain way at other sites, it can definitely affect their standing at my site. If not causing us to ban, at least we'll make a note of it, which has happened before. But, like I said, it's rare. Most of the time, people act like idiots at other sites after I have banned them, not before. Smile

hard to answer. I don't usually track my new members. I have no time to do so. But if I came to know something about a member, maybe I'd be careful with him. not ban right away (if the offences weren't big), but be attentive though

I don't usually track my new members, either. If a person is a known rampant spammer or troll, I may ban him immediately, but only in extreme cases, I suppose. I'll likely just keep a closer eye on him. Some trolls like to act like normal members for a while and then one day they just snap.

Oh yeah, I will also ban people based upon behavior at another one of my communities. Like, if I ban you at one of my sites, almost a certainty that you are banned from all o fmy sites.

I won't take the first step. I'll most likely wait for the member to do something before banning him, mainly because I have complete control of my forum and I backup the database everyday, so no member can do any damage that cannot be undone!

Rarely. If we have a poster who just doesn't fit in with the religious community, then our SOP is to search for them on the net. Oftentimes we justify current moderating action by pointing at their behavior on other forums, though we never use that as primary justification. Just backup evidence.

We have a new member who posted four new topics on our community in one day. They looked too well put-together to be anything but pre-written postings. One of our mods searched for his name and found about 8 different forums where he had posted the same thing. He had never replied to any of them (save one).

So, when he came over to ours, we locked a topic and indicated to him that we wanted conversation, not hit-and-run posting. It was a rather hard-line to what we normally do. But it ended up working; he replied to the posts in his threads, and even contributed to other threads.

However, that's a Cinderella story. Usually they are just banned and don't come back to spam again.

In short, yes, take that into account, but for marginal violations I would let them know YOU are aware of their previous behavior and will be watching them closely, and they'd better shape up. Unless they are spammers, then give 'em the boot Wink
